Audit Readiness & Financial Preparation Services

Prepare the financial records before the audit begins.

Financial advisor and organizational leader reviewing organized financial records before an audit.

Your organization can approach an upcoming audit with greater clarity when the financial records have been reviewed, reconciled, and organized in advance. Preparing early gives leadership time to understand what is ready, identify what still needs attention, and address questions before the independent audit begins.

KYNU works alongside your organization to review the financial records, identify unresolved items, reconcile applicable accounts, organize supporting information, and prepare financial schedules or other materials needed for the audit process. Together, we create a practical preparation plan that helps your organization move into the audit with better-organized information, clearer expectations, and fewer last-minute surprises.

Talk With KYNU About Audit Readiness

Is This Service Right for You?

When Audit Readiness Support May Be the Right Fit

Preparing for an independent audit often involves more than gathering documents when they are requested. Financial records may need to be reviewed, accounts reconciled, questions resolved, and supporting information organized before the auditor’s work begins. Audit-readiness support may be helpful when:

  • Your organization has an upcoming audit and wants to begin preparing before requests and deadlines start arriving.
  • Bank, credit-card, receivable, payable, payroll, grant, or other applicable accounts have not been fully reconciled.
  • Financial reports contain old balances, unusual amounts, unreconciled differences, or transactions that leadership does not fully understand.
  • Supporting documents and financial information are stored in different locations, maintained by several people, or difficult to locate.
  • Leadership is uncertain whether the financial records are complete, supported, and ready to provide to the independent auditor.
  • Staff changes, new programs, additional funding, accounting-system changes, prior audit adjustments, or previously identified issues have made preparation more complex.

Reviewing these matters before the audit begins gives your organization time to answer questions, resolve differences, organize support, and prepare requested financial information without waiting until the audit is already underway.

This service may be appropriate for nonprofits, foundations, faith-based organizations, municipalities and other public-sector organizations, small businesses, and other purpose-driven organizations preparing for an independent audit and needing additional support to organize and strengthen the financial records beforehand.

How KYNU Can Help

From Financial Records
to Organized Audit Preparation

KYNU helps your organization prepare for the independent audit in an orderly and practical way. Together, we review what is already complete, identify records and accounts requiring attention, organize the needed financial information, and establish a preparation plan that reflects the audit timeline and your organization’s internal capacity.

Financial Record Assessment

Review the general ledger, trial balance, financial reports, year-end activity, and other available accounting information to identify incomplete records, unusual balances, inconsistencies, and areas needing additional support.

Account Reconciliations

Reconcile applicable bank, credit-card, receivable, payable, payroll, grant, debt, net-asset, and other financial accounts so differences can be identified and addressed before the audit begins.

Supporting Documentation

Gather and organize applicable statements, invoices, contracts, grant records, payroll information, debt documents, fixed-asset records, board approvals, and other support connected with the financial activity.

Outstanding Items & Corrections

Investigate unreconciled differences, old balances, incorrectly recorded activity, missing information, and other matters requiring attention. Prepare or recommend appropriate corrections for management’s review and approval.

Audit Schedules & Requested Information

Prepare applicable account details, reconciliations, financial schedules, transaction listings, and other information showing how selected balances changed during the year and supporting the amounts reported in the financial records.

Preparation Tracking & Follow-Up

Organize outstanding items, monitor the preparation timeline, follow up on missing information, and assist with financial questions or additional requests included in the service plan.

The Value of Advance Preparation

What Organized Financial Preparation Can Provide

The value of preparing before the audit is not simply having documents ready when they are requested. It is giving leadership time to understand the financial records, resolve questions, organize supporting information, and make needed decisions before the audit is already underway.

  • A clearer understanding of whether the financial records are complete, reconciled, and supported
  • Earlier identification of differences, unusual balances, missing information, and other matters needing attention
  • Better-organized documents and financial schedules that are easier to locate and provide when requested
  • Additional time for management to review proposed corrections, explanations, and financial information
  • Stronger coordination among leadership, accounting personnel, program staff, grant staff, and others involved in preparation
  • A more orderly and manageable process for responding to the independent auditor’s financial-information requests

Throughout the preparation process, KYNU provides the support included in the service plan, organizes the relevant financial information, identifies questions or unresolved matters needing attention, prepares applicable reconciliations and schedules, and follows up on missing information. The timing, responsibilities, requested materials, and level of preparation are shaped around the audit schedule, condition of the financial records, and your organization’s needs.

The KYNU Audit-Readiness Process

02

Reconcile

Complete or review applicable account reconciliations, investigate differences, and determine whether the balances are supported by the underlying financial information.

03

Organize

Gather and arrange supporting documents, account details, reconciliations, schedules, agreements, and other financial information so requested materials can be located and provided efficiently.

04

Resolve

Address missing information, unexplained balances, incorrectly recorded activity, proposed corrections, and other matters requiring management review or a financial decision.

05

Prepare

Finalize the applicable schedules and supporting information, organize the materials for the independent audit process, and identify any outstanding items that still require follow-up.

How We Begin

From Initial Conversation to Audit Preparation

01

Talk With KYNU

We begin with a conversation about the upcoming audit, expected timeline, available financial records, known concerns, prior audit information, people involved, and any requests already received from the independent auditor. This helps us understand what is in place and where preparation support may be helpful.

02

Define the Support

Together, we define the records, accounts, reconciliations, schedules, supporting information, and follow-up activities included in the service plan. We also establish the timeline, meetings, communication schedule, and responsibilities of KYNU and your organization. These expectations are documented in the engagement letter.

If the financial records require more extensive cleanup, rebuilding incomplete financial records, or ongoing accounting support before audit preparation can proceed, KYNU will explain what was identified and recommend a practical path forward.

03

Begin the Audit-Readiness Process

Once the service plan is established, KYNU begins the applicable preparation work according to the agreed schedule. This may include reviewing financial information, completing reconciliations, organizing documentation, preparing schedules, following up on missing information, and addressing questions included in the service plan.

Approaching deadlines, unresolved matters, and decisions requiring management attention are communicated throughout the process. The support can be adjusted when preparation needs or circumstances change.

Important to Know

A Few Important Things to Know

Clear expectations help KYNU and your organization establish a practical and productive working relationship.

  • Audit-readiness and financial-preparation support is tailored to each organization. The specific services provided depend on the audit timeline, condition of the financial records, available supporting information, requests received from the independent auditor, internal capacity, known concerns, and documented service plan.
  • A dependable preparation process requires timely access to accounting records, bank and financial statements, supporting documents, prior audit information, explanations, management decisions, and requested approvals. Delays, incomplete records, or unresolved questions may affect the preparation timeline and the organization’s ability to respond to audit requests.
  • The independent auditor determines the audit scope, procedures, requests, deadlines, proposed adjustments, findings, and final report. KYNU provides preparation and financial support but does not perform the independent audit, review, or other assurance engagement and cannot guarantee an audit opinion, absence of findings, completion date, or other audit result.
  • Management remains responsible for the organization’s financial records, accounting decisions, internal controls, representations provided to the auditor, approval of corrections or adjustments, and responses to audit matters. Ongoing accounting, extensive cleanup, rebuilding incomplete financial records, tax services, legal services, fraud investigations, valuations, grant management, and other specialized services are separate unless specifically included in the service plan.
