Community Awareness & Engagement Planning Services

Help the community know, understand, connect with, and trust the organization.

A diverse group of community members participating in a welcoming planning conversation led by an organizational representative.

Your organization should not be your community’s best-kept secret. It may be doing meaningful work and still find that people do not fully understand who it serves, what it provides, or how to become involved. Building awareness is not only about being seen. It is about helping people understand the work, recognize its value, and develop confidence in the organization.

KYNU works with organizations to identify the people and groups they need to reach, clarify the relationships that matter, and develop practical ways to communicate, connect, listen, and engage. Support is shaped around the organization’s mission, community, current visibility, available capacity, and goals for building stronger, more trusted relationships.

Is This Service Right for Your Organization?

When Community Awareness & Engagement Planning May Be the Right Fit

Meaningful community relationships rarely develop by accident. A more intentional approach to awareness and engagement may be helpful when:

  • Many people in the community are unfamiliar with the organization, its mission, its programs, or the people it serves.
  • The organization wants to become better known beyond its current network of supporters, participants, partners, or customers.
  • Leaders need greater clarity about which people, groups, organizations, or community relationships should receive attention.
  • Outreach activities are occurring, but they are not connected through a clear and consistent approach.
  • The organization wants to listen more intentionally, gather community input, and create meaningful opportunities for people to participate or connect.
  • The organization is preparing to launch or expand a program, pursue new partnerships, strengthen fundraising, address a community need, or increase participation in its work.

This service may be appropriate for nonprofits, small businesses, faith-based organizations, foundations, associations, municipalities and public-sector organizations, and other purpose-driven organizations seeking stronger community awareness, relationships, participation, and trust.

How KYNU Can Help

From Greater Awareness
to Stronger Community Connections

KYNU begins by understanding how your organization is currently known and connected in the community. Together, we identify who the organization wants to reach, what those people need to understand, which relationships should be strengthened, and practical ways to build awareness and engagement within the organization’s available capacity.

Identify Who to Reach

Identify the community members, groups, organizations, partners, supporters, participants, or other relationships that matter to the mission and clarify why each connection is important.

Clarify What to Communicate

Determine what people need to understand about the organization, its mission, services, impact, opportunities, and role in the community, then establish a clearer and more consistent approach for sharing that information.

Plan How to Connect and Engage

Develop a practical plan that may include outreach activities, relationship-building opportunities, ways to listen and gather input, communication approaches, responsibilities, timing, and follow-through.

What the Service May Include

Practical Support for Building
Awareness, Connection, and Trust

Community awareness and engagement planning is shaped around the organization’s mission, work, community, existing relationships, available capacity, and goals for becoming better known and connected. Depending on the organization’s needs, the service may include:

  • Current Awareness and Engagement Review. Review how the organization is currently known, how it communicates and connects with the community, which relationships already exist, and where greater awareness or engagement may be needed.
  • Community Connections to Strengthen. Identify the community members, groups, organizations, partners, supporters, participants, or other relationships the organization wants to reach, strengthen, or develop.
  • Key Information and Messages. Clarify what people need to understand about the organization, including its mission, services, impact, opportunities, needs, and role in the community.
  • Outreach and Communication Approaches. Identify practical ways to share information and build connections through community meetings, presentations, events, partnerships, printed materials, digital communication, direct outreach, or other appropriate methods.
  • Listening and Engagement Opportunities. Develop ways for the organization to listen, gather input, invite participation, respond to questions, and create meaningful opportunities for people to connect with the work.
  • Practical Community Engagement Plan. Organize the priorities, activities, responsibilities, timing, resources, and follow-through needed to move community-awareness and engagement efforts forward.

The KYNU Community Awareness & Engagement Planning Process

From Initial Conversation
to a Practical Engagement Plan

Each service begins with understanding how the organization is currently known and connected in the community and what it wants to accomplish. KYNU then develops a practical process around the agreed goals, people, organizations, and relationships to be considered, information needs, participants, responsibilities, timing, available capacity, and deliverables.

01

Define the Awareness and Engagement Goals

Clarify what the organization wants people to know or understand, who it wants to reach, which relationships it wants to strengthen, and what greater community awareness or engagement should help accomplish.

02

Review Current Connections and Identify Opportunities

Review existing outreach activities, communications, partnerships, community relationships, participation, and available input, then identify strengths, gaps, and practical opportunities for building greater awareness and connection.

03

Develop the Plan and Prepare for Action

Create a practical plan that identifies the key information to communicate, outreach and engagement activities, listening opportunities, responsibilities, timing, available resources, and follow-through needed to move the work forward.

Clear Expectations

Clear Expectations Support
a Productive Engagement-Planning Process

Clear expectations help KYNU and your organization work together effectively throughout the engagement-planning process.

  • A Defined Focus. The agreed service identifies the awareness and engagement goals, people, organizations, and relationships to be considered, participants, information needs, responsibilities, timing, deliverables, and the planning support KYNU will provide.
  • Information and Coordination. The organization may need to provide information about its mission, programs, services, current communications, outreach activities, existing relationships, available resources, and previous community input. It may also need to help coordinate participation from the leaders, staff members, board members, partners, or community participants included in the planning process.
  • Active Participation and Follow-Through. Leaders, staff members, board members, or other participants may need to share perspectives, make decisions, review recommendations, provide feedback, coordinate internally, and follow through on agreed planning responsibilities.
  • Practical Pacing and Additional Support. The timing and pace of the work may depend on access to information, participant availability, decision-making, feedback, and the organization’s capacity to complete agreed next steps. Implementation assistance, event coordination, development of communication materials, ongoing outreach, or other services beyond the agreed planning work may require additional support.
